FRY fest kicks off Friday

The celebration of all things Hawkeye, FRY fest, begins Friday in Coralville, and KWWL has "got you covered."

FRY fest kicks off this morning to gear up for the University of Iowa's first home game, which just happens to be against their arch rival Iowa State. Starting at noon, we'll begin our live coverage which will continue through the KWWL news at 6pm.

FRY fest, which began in 2009, brings in tens of thousands of Hawk fans from all over the country to tailgate and reminisce.  This year's celebration marks the 35th year of the Iowa/Iowa State rivalry which was revived in 1977 after a more than 40 year hiatus between 1934 and 1977.

This year, the "World's Largest Tailgate" will compliment live concerts, beverage tents, and loads of Hawkeye and Cyclones merchandise. That's right, even Iowa State fans will have an opportunity to pick up some cardinal and gold for the first time this year.

But the rivalry isn't the only reason to celebrate. FRY fest honors Iowa's winningest football coach and hall of famer Hayden Fry. He coached the Hawkeyes from 1979-1998. He's currently ranked in the top ten in the number of Division 1 football game wins. He also led the University of Iowa to 14 college bowl games.
