WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Several Democrats gathered in Cedar Falls Thursday night to watch President Barack Obama address the Democratic National Convention.

The evening's events started early, and included remarks from dozens of national figures -- including a familiar face for Iowans.

Iowa City native Zach Wahls gained recognition last year when he spoke before state lawmakers regarding his two moms' right to marry. Many Iowans were proud to see him Thursday supporting the President's stance on marriage equality.

But the highlight of the evening for the folks in Cedar Falls was Vice President Biden and President Obama's time on stage. Several campaign volunteers began tearing up as they watched the pair speak. Diana Harwood, the a Neighborhood Team Leader for the Obama Campaign explained, hearing the President's words motivates her to keep going door-to-door, handing out flyers, whatever it takes to help get President Obama re-elected.

"I really think he's got the real American values we care about. He cares about the middle class. He cares about jobs. he believes that anybody who works hard can get ahead. And that's what American was made for, and what we're all about," said Harwood.

Thursday night's event in Cedar Falls was also a chance for supporters to organize a "Weekend of Action". This Saturday and Sunday, volunteers will be out in the community working to get the word out for Iowans to vote, and if possible, to vote early.

Four years ago, it was that grassroots effort in Iowa which helped launch President Obama to the White House. Local supporters are vowing to do the same in 2012.
