Cedar Falls Utilities broadband construction begins

Cedar Falls Utilities is beginning construction on a new system to bring high-speed internet service to more than 900 customers in the rural electric service area north and west of Cedar Falls.

CFU's service extension will bring fast and reliable broadband service to rural Cedar Falls.  A fast internet connection is vital to many of today's important business functions and recreation options.   CFU received final approval last month on a federal grant to fund part of the construction costs for the rural installation.  The grant helps to make the project possible, because it brings down the high per-customer cost of building a communications system in an area with lower housing density.

Rural residents will soon notice the construction of three transmission towers.   These towers will provide wireless internet connections to approximately half of CFU's rural customers.  The Wireless WaveNet product will offer speeds similar to CFU's most popular internet service plan offered inside the city limits.

The second half of the customers in the new service area will have a fiber optic connection directly to their properties.  This connection is exactly the same as what is available to residents in Cedar Falls.  The fiber-connected customers will be eligible to sign up for CFU's complete menu of high-speed internet and cable TV services.
