Black Hawk Co. unions celebrate Labor Day

Organized unions affiliated with the Iowa Labor Federation in Black Hawk County gathered for their third annual Labor Day picnic Monday.

Several unions were represented, ranging from bus drivers to letter carriers.  The groups say Labor Day is an important holiday to celebrate together -- marking the accomplishments of unions throughout history.

"It's what built the middle class.  It's why people have weekends, holidays, safe work environments.  I'm third generation union so I realize all the benefits that you have by having a union contract:  health benefits, insurance.  It all plays out in the long run for working people," said Lon Kammeyer with ATU Local 1192.

Union leaders expect organized labor to play a big part in this fall's election.  They say while unions might not have as much money as "Super PACs," super political action committees, they have a lot of feet on the street, pledging support to various campaigns.
