UPDATE: One dead in plane crash at Davenport air show

A jet crashed during a flight team performance at the Quad Cities Air Show in Davenport Saturday.

An eyewitness said 3 jets were flying in formation when one of them veered off and crashed. The jet burst into flames and a plume of smoke filled the sky.

The pilot 59-year-old Glenn Smith of Frisco, Texas was killed in the accident. Smith was a member of the Hopper demo flight team.

Davenport Police say the accident occurred around 1:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon. The jet was an L-39 jet developed in the former Czechoslovakia in the late 1960s.

Emergency officials say the pilot simply did not have enough time to safely eject from the aircraft.

Planes returned to the air about an hour after the crash, with "Taps" played as some aircraft flew over the crowd.

There were no reports of injures from spectators on the ground. Investigators are trying to figure out what caused the crash.
