September kicks off Hunger Action Month

The Northeast Iowa Food Bank in Waterloo serves 40,000 people through various agencies across eastern Iowa.

September 1st is the start of Hunger Action Month, a nationwide push for people to get involved in their local communities to help end hunger.

"Our signature is 30 ways in 30 days. You go to our web site where for everyday of the month there's something different you can do to combat hunger in your community," said Barb Prather with the Northeast Iowa Food Bank.

Some simple ways you can help include donating money, volunteering or wearing orange.

Orange is the color of hunger and on Thursday, September 6th everyone is invited to go orange.

"It's just a bright color to know it does exist and it is prevalent in our community," said Prather.

Anyone who does wear orange on Thursday is invited to upload the photo to the Northeast Iowa Food Bank's facebook page. It's just another reminder hunger does exist in our local communities.

Barb Prather with the food bank says thanks in advance to the community for supporting Hunger Action Month.

"It's not just the month of September it's all year because we help people year-round, everyday we're open and we really appreciate the community support," said Prather.

One month, 30 simple ways to make a big difference in the lives of people who are food insecure.
