DES MOINES (KWWL) -

Authorities in Des Moines say this week's record-breaking heat may be responsible for the death of a police dog found dead inside a patrol vehicle.

Harley, a Labrador Retriever, was a K-9 officer assigned to a narcotics team in Des Moines.

Investigators are checking how long Harley was left inside the vehicle and whether the air conditioner was on or some windows were rolled down.

No criminal charges are pending, however the department says they aren't being ruled out.

The department says Harley had been working with his human partner,on Wednesday afternoon. Officer Brian Mathis found him dead in the vehicle.

Harley was a seven year veteran of the Des Moines Police Department.
