Cedar Rapids Public Library might not get skywalk

Cedar Rapids library officials have been forced to put their plans for a skywalk on hold.

The skywalk would connect the new downtown library to a parking garage off Fourth Avenue.

The train tracks that run under the skywalk were raised six inches earlier this year.

Now there's no longer enough clearance from the tracks to the skywalk.

Library officials are meeting with railroad representatives to see if they can be granted a variance to keep the skywalk at its current height.

If not the walk would have to be redesigned, which would cost thousands of dollars.

"It's a part of our project so we are disappointed," said Bob Pasicznyuk, Library Director. "There are a lot of parts of a project where you work through that and if we have to go in another direction trustees will do the right thing."

Library officials say the project is $4 million under budget.

The new building is scheduled to open next summer.
