CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

A Chicago man has been convicted of distributing heroin in Waterloo after a two-day trial in Cedar Rapids federal court.

Dion Thomas, 35, was convicted on Wednesday of one count of conspiracy to distribute 100 grams or more of heroin and one count of heroin distribution after the federal jury deliberated for about two-hours following two days of testimony.

Court officials say evidence presented at trial showed that Thomas was part of a heroin distribution ring that operated in Waterloo between 2009 and 2012.

They say Thomas brought heroin to Waterloo from Chicago for distribution by others working for him. They also say that Thomas distributed large amounts of crack cocaine through the same network.

Thomas faces up to life in prison, $10 million in fines and at least 14 years of supervised release if he is ever released from prison.

A sentencing date has not been set, but Thomas remains in custody of the United States Marshal.
