Hundreds of FEMA Corps members will descend on Vinton starting Tuesday to begin training to help with future disasters.
It's a new unit within Americorps that will fill a variety of disaster support recovery roles in a 10-state region while based in Vinton.
The Americorps workers will solely work with FEMA.
"It will provide FEMA with a young diverse workforce although it will be augmenting FEMA's workforce. It'll provide 1600 more adults the chance to perform service, to get some education and leadership benefits and so on," said Dan Milnes, NCCC Region Director.
The FEMA Corps members - ages 18 to 24 - will provide 10 months of full-time service in disaster response and recovery projects.
