Sweet Tooth: Duos Coffee & Ice Cream in Waverly

Jay Baker serves customers as the manager of Duos Coffee and Ice Cream in Waverly. The business opened in October 2010.

"It's been a great way for me to connect with people in the community and build relationships," said Jay Baker.

Baker was offered the managerial job by James Lee, the owner of Duos. Lee moved to Waverly from Oregon to be the pastor at Grace Baptist Church.

Church is how Lee and Baker met. Before Duos, neither had much experience with running a coffee shop.

"I had a friend who owned a coffee shop I frequented regularly. Didn't think about owning one, though, until we came here and there wasn't one in town," said Jim Lee.

Instead of traveling to other towns to get specialty coffee drinks, Lee decided to open Duos.

"It came about because as the owner of the building we developed offices for non-profits in town to be in the same location, and we wanted to develop a business in the front that would be a place for people to hangout, visit and connect with those non-profits," said Lee.

Almost two years later, the "duo" of coffee and ice cream draws lots of customers.

"Our Duos is really popular. It's a 16 ounce hard serve shake with a shot of espresso," said Jay Baker.

The ice cream is from Chocolate Shoppe in Wisconsin and the coffee is roasted in Charles City.

Jim Lee said a combination of good products and good service makes duos an enjoyable place to be, which is why customers keep coming back for more.

Duos is open everyday but Sunday. Typical hours are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. It's located across from Wartburg College on Bremer Avenue in Waverly.
