The Dubuque Community Schools Board of Education has released the names of the three finalists in their search for a new superintendent.

After an initial round of interviews with six candidates, the school board has narrowed the list down to Michael Houselog from Belvidere, Illinois; Karl Kurt from Central City and Stan Rheingans, the Dubuque Community School District's interim Superintendent.

Houselog has been the superintendent for the Belvidere, Illinois Community Unit School District since 2007.  Houselog previously served as the superintendent for the North Boone Community Unit School District in Poplar Grove, Illinois, and Carbon Cliff-Barstow Community Unit School District in Barstow, Illinois.  He has been an elementary and high school principal, director of special services, special assistant to the superintendent and special education teacher.  Houselog is an alumni of Wahlert Catholic High School and Loras College.  He holds master's degrees from Clarke College and Drake University, and is currently completing a doctoral program at Aurora University in Wisconsin.

Karl Kurt has been the superintendent for the Central City Schools since 2009.  He previously served as principal at Independence High School and assistant principal at Bridgetown Middle School in Cincinnati, Ohio.  Kurt has also been an adjunct professor at Hawkeye Community College, a school psychologist and a reading instructor.  Kurt is also an alumni of both Wahlert Catholic High School and Loras College.  He holds two master's degrees from Miami University in Ohio, and a certificate of advanced studies from the University of Northern Iowa.

Stan Rheingans, the interim superintendent and executive director of human resources for the Dubuque Community School District, has been with the district since 2004.  Prior to coming to Dubuque, he was both principal and assistant principal of Wilton Junior/Senior High School and also served as dean of students, high school social studies teacher and officer in the United States Army.  Rheingans is a graduate of Central Clinton Community High School in DeWitt and holds a bachelor's degree from Loras College, a master's degree from the University of Iowa, and a certificate of advanced studies from the University of Northern Iowa.

Final interviews will be done on Tuesday, September 11 (Stan Rheingans), Wednesday, September 12 (Michael Houselog) and Thursday, September 13 (Karl Kurt).  Interviews include a tour of Dubuque, dinner with the school board and a community forum.

Public feedback sessions will be held each day from 4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. in the board room at the Forum, 2300 Chaney Road in Dubuque. The public is invited to attend.

A video of each candidate is available at www.dbqschools.com/superintendentsearch.

The superintendent position was vacated in May after the school board accepted the resignation of Larie Godinez.

In late April, board members voted unanimously to consider terminating Godinez's contract. They cited loss of confidence by staff and a failure to lead effectively.
