U of I fires disciplined professor

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

The University of Iowa has fired a tenured radiology professor who has been suspended since January 2011 for what university officials called disruptive workplace behavior.

The university on Thursday released a copy of President Sally Mason's order to fire Malik Juweid.

Mason agreed with a faculty panel that recommended Juweid's firing after hearing testimony in June about his behavior, which included angry outbursts, repeated unprofessional emails, and statements some colleagues took as threatening.

Juweid reacted with outrage in an email, saying Mason had a conflict since he is suing her for alleged retaliation. He claims he's being punished for speaking out about discrimination and patient safety issues.

Mason's decision can be appealed to the Iowa Board of Regents.

Juweid has collected his $241,000 annual salary since his suspension.
