Formerly-empty Dubuque storefront now filled with cupcakes

One Dubuque storefront that has sat vacant for months is now open and thriving once again.

Candle Ready Cakes, a cake and cupcake bakery, opened Thursday at 197 Main Street in Dubuque. This is at least the fifth business in this storefront in the last dozen years.

Jill Schrempf, 23, co-owns the bakery with her mother.

"I've been doing it out of my home for about a year and a half now," Schrempf said. "People just loved it, and I had so many orders every weekend that I just needed a bigger space."

Schrempf went to culinary school and then worked in Chicago before returning to Dubuque, her hometown.

"I think Main Street is just awesome with - and Dubuque is great with - the people just supporting local businesses," Schrempf said. "Main Street, there's so much, like, walking traffic, that that's what our main focus is going to be, is getting people off the streets and into the shop."

Along with opening the storefront, Schrempf said she and her mother hired three part time employees and foresee hiring a few more.

"I've been saving up for this. I knew it's what I've been wanting to do, and then loans, but the space-- we just really needed a bigger space to spread out all my things and bigger ovens and fridges. We've got commercial-sized everything in there now," she said.
