CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

A Cedar Rapids man convicted of killing two people and injuring two others will continue to serve a life sentence.

The Iowa Court of Appeals rejected Gerald Rieflin's application for post-conviction relief Wednesday, ruling that he missed the deadline to file.

The court also ruled it agreed with a judge who found the substance of his claims merit less.

Rieflin shot and killed two of his co-workers and wounded two others at the Ralston Foods Cereal plant in January 1995.

Rieflin claimed he was mentally ill and argued he thought the men had attacked his wife.

Jurors rejected his insanity defense.

Rieflin was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, but the Iowa Supreme Court ruled that he was competent to stand trial.
