Distracted driving leads to crash with serious injuries

A crash in Linn County Tuesday afternoon may have been the result of distracted driving.  The Linn County Sheriff's Office reports 16-year-old Alex Holverson of Toddville was using "an electronic communication device" while driving.  Holverson was driving west on County Home Road in Linn County and rear-ended another driver, stopped to turn on Mentzer Road.  The other driver was 58-year-old Kathleen Hartl of Central City.

There were no other occupants in either vehicle, and both drivers were wearing seatbelts.

Holverson and Hartl were taken to St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids.  Authorities say Holverson's injuries could possibly be life threatening.  Hartl's injuries are not considered life threatening.
