Cyclones name Jantz starting quarterback

AMES (KWWL) -

Today Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads named senior Steele Jantz his starting quarterback when the Cyclones open the season on September 1st at Jack Trice Stadium against Tulsa. Jantz won the starting job in a tight race with Jared Barnett who shared time as the top signal caller in 2011.

Rhoads says Jantz won the job because his play in practices and scrimmages and also his ability to make things happen with his arm and his feet.

"Steele is a threat no question about it. He's a threat because he's fast and has good size. I didn't think he was a great runner a year ago I think coach Messingham has addressed that issue and I think he's a better runner right now. Early this morning I was watching tape of the scrimmage on Saturday and there's numerous runs where you can see the improvement in that area and that's a big factor in why he's our starting quarterback on September 1st, " said Rhoads.

The Cyclones season opener against Tulsa at Jack Trice stadium has been moved from an 11 A.M.  to a 2:30 P.M. kickoff to accommodate Fox Sports Net broadcast of the game.
