East High eyes big 2012 campaign

Posted:
WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Following the school's first 2 playoff appearances in 20 years, the East High Trojans have set the goals even higher this year.

East returns one of the most explosive backfields in the state with senior quarterback Desmond VanArsdale and senior running back Aaron Taylor back for their last go-around.  The duo rushed for more than 1,500 yards during last season's 5-5 campaign.

On the defensive side, East returns second-team all-state defensive end Kelvin Clark and third team all-state linebacker Russell Jones.

The experience has head coach Cody Asmus believing his team can accomplish something special.

"Our younger guys have been doing a good job of stepping up to the challenge, pushing everybody each day," Asmus said, "but when you bring back 7 guys that have played since they were starters, they just bring a different kind of tempo, and they have higher expectations."

The Trojans open their season Friday at Dubuque Wahlert.  East High hasn't won their season opener in 18 years.
