Varner wins Olympic Gold

Posted:

Two-time Cyclone national champion Jake Varner now has a new title, Olympic gold medalist.  Varner defeated Valerii Andriitsev of Ukraine in the gold medal match to complete a perfect 4-0 run on Sunday.

With the victory, Varner joined an elite group of 5 Iowa State alumni who went on to win Olympic Gold.  His win also gave the United States multiple gold medals in the sport of wrestling for the first time since the 1996 games.

Varner will also benefit financially from the medal.  The Living the Dream Medal Fund, which was established in 2009, pays United States Olympic wrestling gold medallists $250,000.  This is the first year the fund has rewarded the accomplishment.
