Iowa City kids receive free bikes

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Some lucky kids in Iowa City received brand new bikes, through Variety's Bikes for Kids program.

42 special-needs children received a set of new wheels.  Along with a bike the kids were given a helmet and a bike lock, but first they had to sign a contract with police promising to ride carefully and wear a helmet.

The donated bikes were received with much enthusiasm.  "They don't necessarily get to play on sports teams. They don't necessarily get to go swimming at the swimming pool and so for them to have the opportunity, it gives them a bit of inclusion, and they can participate along with everyone else," said Jennifer Adrian the Assistant Director at Children Center Charities.

The bikes were distributed by Children Center Charities in Iowa City.

The non-profit was awarded a grant through Variety.
