Federal government puts freeze on nuclear power plant permits

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

The federal government is putting a freeze on new permits for nuclear power plants and will not grant license extension for existing plants until issues about storing radioactive waste are resolved.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) says current storage plans are safe and achievable, but a federal court says the NRC didn't detail what the environmental consequences would be if the agency is wrong.

The Duane Arnold plant recently received an extension on their permit through 2034.
