Four-hour stand-off in Ackley ends with one dead

A four-hour stand-off in Ackley ended with one person dead on Thursday.

The Hardin County Sheriff's Office says that deputies and Ackley police were called to 1116 Mitchell Street for an alleged domestic situation and violation of a no-contact order.

When officers arrived, they say they were met at the door by a man with a gun.  Hardin County Sheriff Timothy Smith says officers immediately retreated and called for back-up.  Surrounding police agencies, including the Iowa State Patrol, responded.

Smith says that after about four hours of negotiations, a single gunshot was heard from inside the residence.

When officers entered the home, a man was found with a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head.  His name has not been released.

The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation is conducting the investigation.

Online documents show that 1116 Mitchell Street is owned by Laura Bailey with the secondary owner listed as Lesa Cooper.
