Dubuque peace rally marks nuclear attack

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

A peace rally Monday evening in Dubuque marked the 67th anniversary of the United States' nuclear attack on Hiroshima, Japan in World War II.

About 75 people turned out in Washington Park to hear from speakers, sing songs and peacefully protest nuclear weapons.

The rally helped push for a goal in 2020, rally organizer Richard Fischer said, "to abolish nuclear weapons by August 6, 2020: the 75th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima."

Rally organizers gathered signatures in favor of making Dubuque part of the global Mayors for Peace initiative.

They'll present the more than 300 signatures at the next city council meeting.
