Hot spots could slow down landfill fire clean-up

Posted:
IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Thermal imaging shows hot spots could get in the way of cleanup efforts at the Iowa City landfill.

A fire began there on Memorial Day Weekend, and has been burning since.

Dry conditions led to cracks in a dirt layer used to smother the fire. The cracks let air reach the smoldering material below and caused flare-ups.

Cleanup work began last week and could take two months.  Ash and debris will be uncovered and removed. Any smoldering materials will be extinguished.
