DIKE (KWWL) -
Saturday, August 4th marked the 10th Annual Phil Kruger Memorial 5K in Dike.
Phil Kruger and his wife died in a car accident on Christmas Eve back in 2001.
Phil was a 1996 Dike-New Hartford graduate. He ran track and cross country in high school and at Luther College in Decorah.
Saturday morning, more than 150 people ran the streets of Dike for the memorial 5K. The race is part of Watermelon Days.
Family members said it's great so many people turn out every year in Phil's honor. They hope the race reminds people of the drive and determination Phil had in life.
"Phil was a great role model. He was always there for you. He was a dedicated runner, so this is very appropriate," said Phil's nephew Klayton Kruger.
"I'd just like to say thank you to everyone that they're still keeping him in their hearts," said nephew Kody Kruger.
This year's run was hosted by "The Den" in Dike.
