Sales tax holiday across Iowa

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Back to school means savings for everyone this weekend. Shoppers are out in droves for the Iowa sales tax holiday. Shoppers can purchase a select number of items this weekend that will be exempt from local taxes. And many are taking full advantage.

"Even that extra seven dollars ends up being a shirt or pair of pants." said Jamie Jolley, a local shopper.

Stores have been preparing for this day for a couple of weeks.

"Basically we make sure the freight flow into the store is put on the floor as quickly as possible. Make sure the floor is as full as possible. We also add some additional staffing in to our clothing soft lines, apparel departments to make the guest traffic that will be coming in the front doors," said David Boswell, a Target executive team leader.

And while the tax free holiday is big for back to school shoppers, backpacks, notebooks and other school necessities aren't included in the tax exemption. Shoppers like Amanda Sparrgrove would like to see more back to school items exempt from taxes.

"I think it would help too, especially since she is going into 2nd grade and as they go up one more grade they get more stuff. So I think it would help out more, you know, family budgets more if everything was included in it," said Sparrgrove.

The sales tax holiday has been in Iowa since enacted by the legislature in the year 2000. It lasts Friday and Saturday, and only certain items qualify. For the complete list of exempt items, check out the Iowa Department of Revenue website.
