The University of Northern Iowa announced Friday that President Ben Allen will retire by July 1, 2013.
"It has truly been an honor serving as president of UNI these past six year," Allen said in a message to faculty and staff. "Pat and I believe this is a very special place and we have enjoyed working alongside so many talented students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the university."
Ben Allen is Northern Iowa's ninth president. He was named the school's president in April 2006 and assumed his duties in June 2006.
The announcement came as the Board of Regents met on the university campus Friday morning. The Board will begin a search to replace Allen. Allen says his retirement date is based on when a new president is appointed and ready to take over.
In a statement, Board of Regents President Craig Lang said, "The Board is most proud and appreciative of Ben's leadership role in Iowa's Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) initiative, and his extraordinary work in leading UNI through significant economic challenges."
