Cedar Falls athletes screened for heart condition

Posted:

Some area athletes are taking an extra step to keep safe and stay healthy. Cedar Falls students were screened for serious heart conditions Tuesday. Medical workers say that certain conditions like hypertrophic cardiomyopathy can lead to sudden death during strenuous activities. The Heart Healthy Teen Screen held by Covenant Clinic Cardiology takes a look at the athletes family history, checks blood pressure and an electrocardiogram.

One nurse said this event was inspired by a near tragic situation last year.

"One of the triggers were last fall there was a marathon here and a young runner did go down at the finish line. Fortunately, enough people were in the area, physicians and emergency personnel," said Heather Loy, R.N.
