Former Williamsburg police chief pleads guilty

A former Williamsburg police chief and gun dealer has pleaded guilty to manipulating cash deposits to conceal gun sales.

Michael Gabriel formerly operated Gabes Gun shop in Williamsburg and retired from the Williamsburg Police Department in 2007.

Court documents say that Gabriel tried to hide proceeds from his gun business from April 27, 2009 to August 17, 2010. The documents say that he would split cash deposits in excess of $10,000 into smaller deposits to avoid the federal cash reporting requirement.

As part of his plea, Gabriel has agreed to forfeit nearly $375,000 and he also faces up to five years of probation.
