Job fair available for PFG and myVerona employees

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

Over 200 employees lost their jobs after the downfall of PFG Best and myVerona.  Tuesday, there may be some relief as one of the first job fairs will be held for those employees.

Peregrine Financial Group and myVerona abruptly closed their doors a couple weeks ago after owner, Russ Wasendor, Sr., attempted suicide. That's when details came out regarding a longtime fraud scheme spanning 20 years involving millions of dollars.

On July 18th, Hawkeye Community College facilitated a closed door employee informational meeting. The meeting helped connect myVerona and Peregrine workers with available community resources.

Tuesday, about 15 local employers will be on hand looking to hire for new positions.

The focus of the event is for those displaced workers with an interest in careers in childcare, customer service, food service, and maintenance.

"We know the businesses in the Cedar Valley are seeking good, talented people with all kinds of skills. So it was important that we act quickly to start matching up the employees that were available, the talent available with the opportunities available in the Cedar Valley," said Steve Dust, CEO, Greater Cedar Valley Alliance & Chamber.

The Cedar Valley Alliance also set up a website to help connect displaced employees with local employers. All you need to do is send your resume to talent@cedarvalleyalliance.com.

They will then work to match former employees with potential job opportunities.

Tuesday's job fair starts at 1:00 PM and ends at 3:00 PM. It will be held at 1025 Technology Parkway in Cedar Falls, next to the TEAM Technologies building.

A gloomy and rainy afternoon didn't stop people from making it out early to the campgrounds Friday. By the afternoon, Scales Pointe Campground and Marina in North Liberty, was full of RVs, tents, and houseboats ready to celebrate the Memorial Day weekend. "We don't worry about the weather. We just put a tent up, put a poncho on, and drink in the rain," Mike Kirk said. Kirk said he's been camping at the same spot for five years now and that it's the best place to be. ...More >>
