Free bicycles available to people in need

A Cedar Rapids church is celebrating Christmas in July. First Lutheran Church is collecting old bicycles and giving them away to people in the community.

One of its pastors started an initiative to recycle bikes and give them to people without one.

"My wife went out to the landfill and saw that perfectly good bikes were being thrown away and thought 'That's too bad. There's kids that would love to ride those.' So we thought let's see if we can't do that in mass," said Craig Brown, who is an Associate Pastor at the church.

So the church asked the community to lend a hand.  Since Saturday it's collected more than 100 bikes.  The donations continue to roll in.

First Lutheran is collecting bikes in good condition through Wednesday.

The church will give the bikes out on Saturday, but anyone who wants one needs to stop by beforehand to pick up a voucher.  There's no age or income limit.

Through donations, the church was also able to purchase 100 helmets that they'll give to the new bike owners on Saturday.

If you want to drop off a bike or pick up a voucher, the church's offices are open each day from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

First Lutheran Church is located at 1000 3rd Avenue SE in Cedar Rapids.
