CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

Wrestling legend Keith Young passed away in Cedar Falls on Sunday at the age of 81.

Young, who was born in Algona on September 29, 1929, became the head wrestling coach at Cedar Falls High School and led the Tigers to state championships in 1968 and 1976.

Young wrestled at Iowa State Teachers College, where he won individual titles in 1949, 1950 and 1951.  He was instrumental ISTC's 1950 NCAA wrestling championship.

Kyle Klingman, of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Dan Gable Museum, says that Young developed into one of the greatest wrestlers in American history, despite the fact that Algona High School did not offer wrestling until his senior year.

Young was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1979 as a Distinguished Member.

Funeral arrangements for Young are pending.
