Walker dedicates veterans memorial

WALKER (KWWL) -

People in the Linn County community of Walker now have a lasting tribute to their veterans.

American Legion members in Walker sounded a bell as part of a dedication ceremony for the memorial.

They've raised money for the last 18 months to build the memorial at Walker Cemetery.

It's dedicated to veterans of all wars.

The memorial consists of a large central pillar bearing the names of area soliders who were killed in action, and two smaller stones inscribed with the names those who served. There are also flags from all branches of the military flying, as well as an American, an Iowa and a POW/MIA flag.

There are still more than 70 names the Legion would like to place on the memorial and plan to continue contacting surviving family members and raising money to do so.
