BLACK HAWK COUNTY (KWWL) -

Believe it or not, this is not my first time shooting a bow and arrow. My dad was actually my first teacher. He got me a bow and arrow and taught me how to shoot when I was just a little kid. I actually had a pink quiver to hold my arrows, and I was even in an archery league. It's been about 20 years since I picked up a bow and arrow, and I thought with the Olympics, what a great time to give it a try again.

Mike Hertges with Mike's Archery in Waterloo agreed to take the role of coach, even loaning me his wife's bow and arrow.

Mike has shot archery for 55 years, starting when he was just 11 years old.

His best advice for me...

"Form," he said.

So I take Mike's advice and try to remember my earlier training. And I quickly get into a rhythm. I'm actually quite surprised at my accuracy after all these years. Mike reminds me to focus and take my time, and I keep hitting the target.

But I'm not the only one who can hit the target.

Dawson Graham is quite impressive at five years old, and he thinks I'm pretty young, too. When I asked him how old he thought I was, he responded "13".  Therefore, he was shocked to learn I am 29.

Dawson started working with Mike last year and now shoots with his dad, Dave.

"I love teaching young kids how to shoot a bow. I like to teach technique right," said Mike Hertges.

Mike points out you don't have to be a hunter to shoot archery, but Dawson knows what he'd like to hunt.

"I really want to shoot a moose," said Dawson Graham.

I wouldn't want to compete against Dawson in a few years.

I was just happy I hit the target! And hopefully my dad is proud I still remember what he taught me so many years ago.
