WATERLOO (KWWL) -

The Iowa Department of Public Safety building is now renamed to honor a fallen officer.

Two members of the Pape family came to watch as state leaders unveiled the new name.

The building is now called the "Oran Pape State Office Building."

Pape was one of the first 50 patrolmen to serve the state.

He was killed in Muscatine County in 1936 by a bullet fired from a highway bandit's gun.

While he is rememberEd for his service, he's also known for being a superior athlete.

Pape played football for the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Green Bay Packers. He was also a talented swimmer and lifeguard.
