DUBUQUE COUNTY (KWWL) -

Wednesday was Kids Day at the Dubuque County Fair, though parents worried how the heat would affect their children.

Dubuque mom Elizabeth Kuhle came to the fair Wednesday with her two kids.

"I have a seven-month-old and a three-year-old at the fair today, and it's very hot," she said. "We're trying to keep hydrated. We have hats on and sunscreen, so that's kind of how we're coping, but we didn't want to miss kids day."

Fair manager Jamie Blum said weather like Wednesday's can lower a day's attendance by 30 to 40 percent. However, she said, the fair's two air conditioned buildings and outdoor misters and fans are ways for people to cool off.

The 59th annual Dubuque County Fair continues through Sunday. Its theme this year is Apple Pies, Family Ties. Blum said an average of 70,000 people visit the six-day fair every year.

Kids 11 and under are always free. Everybody else pays $9.
