Sweet Tooth: Cookie Mom Cookies in Traer

Amber Pokorny moved to Traer from Iowa City about four years ago. Two years ago, she opened Cookie Mom Cookies and Cafe.

"It's been my dream to have an actual store front, and it's such an awesome community and a beautiful building, great location," said owner Amber Pokorny.

Her business is located in downtown Traer. Customers stop in for a sweet treat, a cup of coffee or some breakfast and lunch.

"Breakfast cheesecake is one of our popular things. That's something we run out of quite a bit," said Pokorny.

Before opening her business, Amber would bake out of her home. It actually started when she would send cookies to school with her children.

"Teachers fell in love with the cookies and said I needed to sell them, so I started selling them at the Farmer's Market," she said.

Pokorny thinks her previous restaurant experience helped when she decided to expand to an actual store front.

"I worked for my grandpa. He was the first franchise owner of KFC in the state of Iowa, so I was raised in that restaurant environment," she said.

The speciality item at Cookie Mom Cookies has to be the decorated sugar cookies.

"It's my great-grandma's recipe that I've tweaked a little bit, and a frosting I've developed on my own. So everything is homemade," said Amber Pokorny.

Amber can make almost any shape of sugar cookie with her four hundred cookie cutters! She also makes what she calls traditional cookies, which is sort of one of her favorite sweet treats.

"My favorite is oatmeal raisin cookie dough. I know you're not supposed to eat the dough, but that's my favorite," said Pokorny.

No matter which dough or cookie you enjoy, you're sure to find something you like at Cookie Mom Cookies where cookies fix everything.
