New "Sprouts" garden project between Hy-Vee & YWCA

Six to eight year olds with the YWCA's Summer Days program are getting some experience working in the garden.

"They enjoy playing crops and robbers, which is where they weed and they love watering. It's usually a pretty good experience," said Lisa Remetch with the YWCA.

It's all part of the Sprouts program between Hy-Vee and the YWCA.

"We basically garden with the kids and use that fresh produce to make different recipes," said Stephanie Beenken with Hy-Vee.

The children meet at two garden plots at the Maples Community Garden in Waterloo once a week for about an hour.

They pick weeds, pick vegetables and then enjoy some of their fresh produce.

"It gets them interested in vegetables and healthy eating because they get to help. Research shows if kids help they try, they eat and they actual eat more healthful," said Beenken.

Of course, not every child likes every vegetable, but there's plenty to choose from each week.

"We have zucchini, squash, basil, cilantro, green beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, so a wide variety," said Beenken.

The Sprouts program started at the beginning of June and is scheduled through mid-August.
