79th Waterloo Open begins this weekend

Some of the best golfers in the Midwest and many other up and coming pros are in the Cedar Valley this weekend for the 79th annual Waterloo Open.

The amateurs began play Friday at Gates Park and South Hills golf courses in Waterloo, while the professionals will tee off Saturday from Irv Warren golf course.

Friday the pros got in a little practice at Irv Warren while competing in a pro-am event.

Waterloo Open organizers are excited about this year's event, which will pay out $45,000 to the winner.

Friday night the Waterloo Open honored the oldest living United States Open Golf Champion, 90-year-old Jack Fleck.

At the 1955 U.S. Open in San Francisco, Fleck upset the great Ben Hogan in a playoff.

Jack Fleck, who is from Davenport is the first Iowan to win a major golf championship, and as a senior competitor he also won the Senior PGA championship in 1979. Fleck also won the Waterloo Open professional tournament in 1950 when it was played at Gates Park.
