Unemployment benefits applications rose last week

Posted:
WASHINGTON, D.C. (KWWL) -

The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits rose last week. According to the latest numbers released by the Labor Department, applications rose by 34,000 to a seasonally adjusted 386,000. The increase follows last week's drop of 24,000 and it is also the biggest gain since April 2011. However, economists are saying the numbers could have been distorted by seasonal factors resulting from the auto industry's temporary summertime layoffs.

The four-week average fell by 1,500 to 375,500. The unemployment rate typically falls when applications fall below 375,000.
