Evansdale firefighters pass on water and food donations to others in need

Evansdale firefighters are passing on the goodwill of others -- giving the surplus donations from the weekend to others in need.

When law enforcement asked for help from the community in finding Elizabeth Collins and Lyric Cook, they came in droves. Those who couldn't help search donated food, water, and supplies.

"Once the call went out and the word started to spread, what a miraculous turnout," firefighter Justin Smock said.

When the volunteer ground search was disbanded, firefighters were left with tons of donations -- literally. So much, that the weight from the items broke the supports helping hold up one of the two semi trailers.

"We would up having tons of extra materials, more than enough to take care of our people," said Smock.

Now that the central command for the search has moved out of the Evansdale Community Response Center, firefighters decided to put the extra supplies to good use.

"Because they've been so generously donated, if we can't use them, we want to make sure somebody could," said Smock.

The local Red Cross, Salvation Army, and Northeast Iowa Food Bank are grateful for the donations. Although they were collected under tragic circumstances, firefighters are pleased to pass along the goodwill.

"The true thanks needs to go to the people who brought all this down here. And they need to know we are so appreciative of bringing these items down and supplying them. We want to let them know -- thank you, from the bottom of our hearts," Smock added.
