FBI dive team may join search effort at Meyers Lake

EVANSDALE (KWWL) -

An FBI dive team from Los Angeles may join other agents and Iowa officers investigating the disappearance of 8-year-old Elizabeth Collins and 10-year-old Lyric Cook-Morrissey.

An FBI spokesperson says if divers are deployed, they would search the deeper holes of water in the lake.

Black Hawk County Solid Waste Management has also confirmed that trash from Evansdale has been segregated at the county landfill, but would not confirm the trash is actively being searched.

The two girls were last seen at their grandmother's house in Evansdale on Friday.  Their bicycles and Elizabeth's purse were found later that day at nearby Meyers Lake, and FBI dogs detected the girls' scent in the area.

Black Hawk County Chief Deputy Rick Abben said the girls' bikes have been processed for evidence.  He also warned reporters - just because the bikes and purse were found near the lake doesn't mean the girls were ever actually there.

Crews have been draining Meyers Lake since Monday.  Authorities earlier said they were confident the bodies of the girls were not in the water, but they say they want to be 100% sure.  The families of the girls think the two girls have been abducted.

There is no evidence to suggest the girls ever went into the water, or were taken.  During a news conference Tuesday afternoon, Deputy Abben said their investigation has stalled.
