Farmers: Tough times loom as drought conditions worsen

Iowa's farmers warn that tough times loom as drought conditions worsen.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture said in a report released Monday that only 36 percent of the corn crop is in good condition or excellent condition, while only 38 percent of the soybean crops are in good or excellent condition.

This contrasts with a year ago when 80 percent of both corn and soybean crops were in good or excellent condition. While there is some rain in the forecast, it still may not be enough.

Tuesday farmers met with Gov. Terry Branstad and state agriculture officials in Mount Pleasant. Farmers expressed their concerns over the drought conditions. Climatologist's say the drought compares to that of 1988. The Iowa Pork Producers Association said it's causing feed prices to spike and the pork industry is on the verge of a financial crisis.
