WASHINGTON, D.C. (KWWL) -

Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley is questioning whether the government's investigation of Toyota's problems with unintended acceleration was thorough enough.

Sen. Grassley sent a letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Thursday.  It questions whether a probe that cleared Toyota of electronic problems thoroughly explored gremlins that could have caused cars to accelerate wildly.

Grassley says key questions remain unanswered about the problems. He asks what the agency did to investigate "tin whiskers" that can sprout from solder and cause short circuits in electronic devices.

The safety agency says sticky gas pedals and floor mats trapping the pedals are the only known causes of Toyota's acceleration problems.

Toyota's electronics were cleared of any problems in a 2011 report that included work by NASA scientists.
