ISU enrollment could top Iowa this year

AMES (KWWL) -

When it comes to college enrollment, the University of Iowa traditionally has the most students.  But that could change this fall, for the first time in more than 30 years -- 1979!

Officials at Iowa State University say enrollment could pass 31,000 this year... which would be more than Iowa's expected enrollment of 30,800.

The official numbers won't be reported until September.

While the two universities are not competing, the Director of Admissions at Iowa says there's been a growing interest in agriculture, which gives Iowa State the edge.

Officials at the University of Northern Iowa say they expect enrollment to be down this year, at below 13,000 students.  However, they say UNI has seen an improved graduation rate the past several years, which means fewer students return for classes in the fall.
