Shots fired near North Liberty leads to chase and arrest

A report of shots fired led to a short chase and the arrest of a Cedar Rapids man near North Liberty on Tuesday.

Johnson County Sheriff's deputies were called to the intersection of 250th Street NW and James Avenue NW at around 10:12 p.m. on Tuesday for a report of shots fired.

A deputy says a witness described a silver car as being involved.  A vehicle matching the description was seen on Penn Street.  Deputies say when they turned on their lights and sirens to pull over the car, the driver sped away.

Deputies say that as they chased the car, someone threw a gun from the car.

The car was finally stopped on Hodge Street.  The driver, 28-year-old Tyson Anthony Hathaway, was arrested.

Deputies say they found marijuana in Hathaway's wallet and he was intoxicated when he was arrested.  They also say that Hathaway is a convicted felon and the gun was reported stolen from Buffalo, Iowa.

After the arrest, deputies returned to the intersection of 250th Street and James Avenue and found shell casings matching ones removed from the recovered gun.

Hathaway is charged with possession of a controlled substance, driving while barred - habitual offender, operating a vehicle while intoxicated, possession of a firearm as a felon, trafficking a stolen weapon, eluding and reckless use of a firearm.
