Cedar Rapids fire blamed on air conditioner

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

A Cedar Rapids mobile home fire on Tuesday morning is being blamed on an air conditioning unit.

Greg Buelow, Public Information Officer for the Cedar Rapids Fire Department, says that neighbors walked outside just after 7:00 a.m. Tuesday morning and saw a window air conditioner on fire at 700 41st Avenue Drive SW, lot 25.

When crews arrived, they say the fire had spread to the roof and had consumed half of the living room.  They were able to contain the damage to the living room and outside wall.

The homeowner, 45-year-old Dave Laton, was not home at the time of the fire.  Buelow says he will not be able to return to his home.

Investigators say the fire was caused by an electrical failure related to the air conditioner.
