Sendoff planned for Waterloo National Guard unit

The community is invited to a sendoff for a Waterloo-based Iowa Army National Guard unit that will deployed as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

The ceremony will be held on July 19 at 2:00 p.m. for about 50 members of Detachment 1, Company C, 2-211th General Support Aviation Battalion (MEDEVAC).  The ceremony will take place at the Army Aviation Support Facility #2 at 2245 West Big Rock Road in Waterloo.

The unit will leave for Fort Hood, Texas after the ceremony for additional training heading overseas.

Det. 1, Co. C, 2-211th GSAB uses UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters to perform aerial medical evacuations and to supply medical service and support for patients enroute to combat support hospitals.

The unit, which was created in 2005, is made up of the former Troops D, E and F of 1st Squadron, 113th Cavalry, all of Waterloo.

The unit was last deployed in 2008 as a part of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. They completed federal active duty in Afghanistan and Iraq and returned to Iowa in July 2009.
