Cedar Falls Gym to compete in World CrossFit Championships

Team CrossFit Kilo of Cedar Falls consists of two married couples, a firefighter, a police officer, an Iraqi war hero and a soccer coach. To prepare for the World's toughest competition---They lift weights--they run-- they jump rope--they do pull ups--they do handstands--you get the idea.

Marine Corps veteran Armand McCormick along with his wife Sarah introduced CrossFit to the Cedar Valley three years ago. Last year--with Sarah pregnant with the couples' first child---McCormick competed as an individual and finished 24th at the World Games. from that experience Armand believes his group is physically prepared to win--they just have to be mentally ready for anything.

"What it's going to take to win it is not to be intimidated by anything they throw at us-- if they tell us we have to throw a refrigerator --somebody better freaking figure it out."

CrossFit Kilo enters the games ranked ninth in the World...after finishing second at the North Central Regional in Chicago in May.

UNI assistant soccer coach Sonia Rodriguez believes this team's strength is attitude ---of never accepting defeat. .

"Our different strengths balance eachother out..... it's cool to see happen."

Waterloo firefighter Ian Wass and his wife Jessica a counselor at Janesville Schools have been doing CrossFit together for more than two years..even their young daughters can be seen at the gym from time to time. it's helped strengthen their family bond.

Jessica Wass said, "When you do CrossFit..you talk about it and we don't annoy eachother"

The World CrossFit games begin Friday, July 13th.
