Kernels get win over Timber Rattlers

In a game that saw no runs scored in the final five innings, the Kernels evened their series with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at a game a piece with a 5-3 win.

After going down 2-0, the Kernels tied things up in the bottom of the first inning.  Eric Stamets hit a solo home run to make it 2-1.  It was Stamets' first professional home run.  Then, after hitting a triple, Alex Yarbrough scored on a Frazier Hall sacrifice fly to make it 2-2.

Cedar Rapids took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the second when Abel Baker scored on a Stamets single to center field.

Wisconsin tied the game in the fourth inning, but the Kernels would come back in their half of the inning and take the lead for good.

After a Trevor Hairgrove walk and a Stamets single, Yarbrough singled to center, scoring both runners, giving the Kernels the 5-3 win.

Frank DeJiulio got the win, allowing three runs on six hits and two strikeouts in five innings of work.

Carmine Giardina pitched three innings in relief of De Jiulio.  He allowed two hits and struck out seven.

Ty Kelley picked up his 12th save of the year.  He allowed no hits and struck out one in one inning of work.

Kevin Shackelford took the loss for Wisconsin.  He allowed five runs on nine hits with two strikeouts and one walk in four innings of work.

The Kernels will try and win the series on Friday night.  First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
